Brussels: area by area: The Lower Town – The Grand Place – The She-Wolf, The Sack, The Wheelbarrow
The origins of the houses lining the Grand Place is mercantile. Each Guild gave its house a distinctive name, but some of these houses even predate the Guilds. Some stunning ornate facades include those of : N°1-2 : Au Roi D'Espagne ( Bakers' Guild) N°3 : La Brouette (The Wheelbarrow - Tallow Merchants' Guild) N°4 : Le Sac (The Sack - Joiners' and Coopers' guild) N°5 : La Louve (The She Wolf - Archers' Guild) N°6 : Le Cornet (The Horn - Boatmens' Guild)
These last three houses (The She-Wolf, The Sack, The Wheelbarrow) were not completely destroyed in 1695.
Because of the partially preserved facades, they rank among the most beautiful houses on the Grand-Place.
