Berlin: area by area - East of the Centre - Marienkirche

St.-Marien-Kirche is the second-oldest parish church in Berlin, and the only medieval church in the city still to host services of worship.
The three-span hall church was built from 1270 until the early 14th century in north German backstein gothic style. I
n 1380 the church was restored after a major fire, but only slight changes were made. St.-Marien-Kirche was given a new silhouette in the 15th century through the construction of a new tower, which Carl Gotthard Langhans crowned with a dome in 1790.
The buildings surrounding the church were destroyed in air raids during the Second World War. The interior of St.-Marien-Kirche contains the 22m-long fresco "Dance of the Dead" from 1485, which was whitewashed over in 1730 and rediscovered in 1860.
The alabaster chancel, completed by Andreas Schlüter in 1703, and the gothic baptismal font from 1437 are also of note.
